Formentor Beach: sand, pines and mountains in the north

Formentor is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca, and one of the few that brings together sand, pine forest and mountains in a single view. Set on the spectacular Formentor peninsula, at the far northern tip of the island (in the municipality of Pollença), it’s a stretch of fine sand beneath the pines, with calm water and views of the Serra de Tramuntana. But getting there has its tricks in summer, so we’ll tell you everything: what it’s like, how to reach it and what’s around it.

Formentor is a byword for elegance and nature. It’s home to one of the most historic and emblematic hotels in Mallorca, and for decades its beach has been a refuge for anyone seeking a dream sea in a protected setting of great scenic beauty, far from the bustle of the big tourist areas.

The beach

What Formentor beach is like

Formentor beach (also known as Cala Pi de la Posada) is a stretch of fine white sand, with clear water that shifts from turquoise to blue and a seabed that slopes gently from the shore, ideal for swimming and for families with children. Its great signature is the pine forest that reaches almost to the water’s edge, offering very welcome natural shade in the warm months — something unusual on Mallorcan beaches, and which makes it especially comfortable when the sun is strong.

Sheltered within the bay of Pollença, it tends to have calm water with little swell, making it one of the safest beaches in the north for swimming. From the sand you look out at the Tramuntana mountains tumbling down to the sea, a scene that very few Mediterranean beaches can match. It’s a wide, comfortable beach, with some services in high season.

Formentor also has a long history as a destination of prestige: right by the beach stands one of the most emblematic and oldest hotels in Mallorca, which since the early 20th century has drawn artists, writers and travellers from all over the world. That blend of discreet glamour and untouched nature is exactly what makes this beach unique.

The water, clean and sheltered, is perfect for family swimming and for snorkelling at the rocky ends of the beach, where the seabed is rich and visibility excellent. And arriving by boat from Port de Pollença, taking in the coast and the cliffs from the water, is an experience worth it in its own right, quite apart from the beach.

Beyond the sand

The Formentor peninsula

The beach is just the gateway to one of the most spectacular landscapes in Mallorca. The Formentor peninsula reaches out into the Mediterranean between dizzying cliffs, with the famous Mirador des Colomer — looking down over a rocky islet and the whole bay of Pollença — and the Formentor lighthouse at its northernmost point, at the end of a breathtaking road of hairpin bends. Driving the peninsula from end to end, stopping at the viewpoints and finishing at the lighthouse, is one of the island’s great outings.

The Mirador des Colomer is about 4 km from the beach by road, with vertiginous views over the islet of the same name and the bay. The Formentor lighthouse, at the tip of the peninsula, is about 12 km from the beach and rewards you with an utterly unique panorama of the Mediterranean from the cliffs. The road linking the two points, with its curves over the void, is in itself one of the great attractions of northern Mallorca.

The trick the regulars know: in summer, the most comfortable and most beautiful way to reach the beach is the boat from Port de Pollença. It runs several times a day, the crossing follows the peninsula’s cliffs from the sea, and it drops you straight at the beach. You skip the car restrictions and arrive with a first view of Mallorca that’s hard to beat.

How to get there

Reaching Formentor: what to know in summer

Here’s the key thing to know before you plan your visit. In high season (June to October), access for private vehicles to the Formentor peninsula is restricted during the central hours of the day, to protect the environment and prevent the single access road from becoming gridlocked. In those months, you have three options:

1. Shuttle bus (line 334): it leaves from Port de Pollença frequently in season, running along the peninsula with stops at the Mirador des Colomer, the beach and the lighthouse. It’s the most common and best-organised option, with generous timetables.

2. Boat from Port de Pollença: a crossing of around 30-40 minutes that follows the northern cliffs from the sea and arrives directly at the beach. A lovely option, worth it for the journey itself, not just for the destination.

3. Car very early: anyone wanting to drive in summer has to do so first thing in the morning, before the restriction begins. Parking is limited and fills up fast. It’s worth checking the restriction times, which are updated each season.

Out of season (November-May), you can drive in freely and enjoy the beach and the peninsula in complete peace. Winter at Formentor has a wholly different beauty: the viewpoints almost to yourself, the dramatic northern light, and the feeling of having one of the most beautiful landscapes in Mallorca all to yourself.

Underwater and on foot

Snorkelling and trails on the peninsula

The rocky ends of Formentor beach are a good starting point for snorkelling: clear water, a varied seabed of rock and meadows of Posidonia oceanica, and some interesting marine life among the stones. Do respect the Posidonia, which is protected and is the main indicator of the health of the Mediterranean.

From the beach there are also trails that head into the peninsula, among the pines and always with the sea close by. The most accessible one leads to a viewpoint over the bay in about 20-30 minutes on foot. The longer trails across the peninsula are well signposted but more demanding, especially in summer. In spring, the Tramuntana flora on the Formentor peninsula is at its best: rosemary, lavender and rockrose among the pines.

What to bring to Formentor: water and your own food if you’re spending the whole day (services are limited away from the beach), footwear for the trails if you want to explore the peninsula, sun cream and something warm if you’re heading to the lighthouse (the wind at the northern tip can take you by surprise). In summer, check the line 334 bus times or the boat frequency beforehand.

When to go

The best time for Formentor

Formentor is wonderful throughout the swimming season, though in high summer you have to organise yourself well because of the access restrictions. For many, the best times are late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October): the weather plays along, there are fewer people, and access is more flexible. The water in June is already mild (around 22-23 °C) and the beach has a calm feel that simply doesn’t exist in July and August.

In winter, the peninsula is a spectacular destination for a day out: the viewpoints almost deserted, the lighthouse wrapped in mist or under a clear January sky, and the northern light giving the coast a dramatic, beautiful air. Formentor in winter is one of the best-kept secrets of northern Mallorca, reachable by car with no restrictions and with a stillness that’s impossible to find in summer.

The surroundings

What's near Formentor beach

Formentor belongs to the municipality of Pollença, one of the most charming villages in the north. A few minutes away is Port de Pollença, a calm, family-friendly coastal town with its seafront promenade, its restaurants and all the services; this is where the bus and the boats to the peninsula depart from. Very close by are the beautiful Cala Sant Vicenç — three small coves of turquoise water, one of the jewels of the north — the historic centre of Pollença with its Calvari steps and Sunday market, and the bay and walled town of Alcúdia. It’s one of the areas with the most nature and heritage on the whole island, perfect for combining beach, mountains and culture, and a magnet for lovers of hiking and cycling all year round.

Out of season, access by car is open.

Is there a boat to Formentor from Port de Pollença?

Yes, in high season there are regular boats from Port de Pollença that arrive directly at the beach. The crossing takes around 30-40 minutes, follows the peninsula’s cliffs from the sea and is, in itself, a memorable experience. You can go by boat and come back by bus, or the other way round. Check the updated timetables in season.

Is Formentor beach good for children?

Yes. The water is calm (the bay shelters it from swell), the seabed slopes gently, and the fine sand and the pine forest that reaches almost to the shore make it very comfortable for families. Lifeguard cover in season adds extra peace of mind. The summer access logistics (bus or boat) are very straightforward for families.

What is the Mirador des Colomer and how do I get there?

The Mirador des Colomer is the most famous viewpoint on the Formentor peninsula: from it you can see the islet of Colomer and the whole bay from a spectacular cliff. It’s about 4 km from the beach along the peninsula road. In summer you can reach it on the shuttle bus, which stops there before reaching the beach.

When is best to go to avoid the restrictions and the crowds?

May, late June and September-October are the best windows: good weather, water already mild or still mild, and less pressure on access. In May, access by car is completely open. In winter, the peninsula is a spectacular destination for a day out, with no restrictions and very few people.

How long does the bus take from Port de Pollença?

The bus journey (line 334) from Port de Pollença to Formentor beach takes around 20-25 minutes. There are intermediate stops at the Mirador des Colomer and other points along the road. Timetables are updated each season; it’s worth checking them before you set off.
