International Schools in Mallorca: Every School, Curriculum and Distance From the South-East

Amanecer con niebla sobre los campos del Pla de Mallorca

The short version: the official register of the Balearic education authority lists seventeen schools for children on Mallorca with a foreign curriculum, and one more, a Spanish school, teaches the full International Baccalaureate. Almost all of them are in Palma, Calvià and Marratxí, between 40 and 70 km from the south-east. The exception is Rafa Nadal International School in Manacor, about 26 km from Campos and 31 km from Santanyí, which is also the school that briefly carried the name “American International School of Mallorca”. This guide lists every school with its curriculum, ages and official website, the real driving distances from Santanyí, Ses Salines and Campos, and how the public system, the nurseries and the 2026-2027 calendar work.

An American family, Starting Over in Spain, explains how they moved their children from US schools into Spanish schools and weighed public against private; it is here because it shows that decision from a parent’s side. The Mallorca details are in the guide below.

Is there an “American International School of Mallorca”?

It is the most searched school name on the island among Americans, so it deserves a precise answer. According to the official gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB), the school authorized in Manacor in 2015 under the education system of the United States changed its name to American International School of Mallorca in 2016, and in July 2019 changed it again to Rafa Nadal International School, the name it uses today. There is no other school with that name on the current register of the Conselleria d’Educació i Universitats.

Today the school teaches the British curriculum from pre-nursery (from age 2) to Year 6 and an American programme from Grade 7 to Grade 12, which leads to an American High School Diploma and includes Advanced Placement courses. Classes are taught in English, with Spanish and Mallorquín as subjects, and the school offers boarding. It sits inside the Rafa Nadal Academy campus on the Cales de Mallorca road, just outside Manacor.

Every international school in Mallorca, from the official register

The list below comes from the register of schools published by the Conselleria (updated 7 September 2026), where foreign-curriculum schools appear as centres docents estrangers. Each curriculum and age range has been checked against the school’s own website. Agora Portals is included because, although it is registered as a Spanish private school, it offers all three IB programmes, the only school in the Balearic Islands to do so according to its website.

Why many families in the south-east look at Manacor

Among the families we work with in the south-east, the choice usually comes down to two options: Rafa Nadal International School in Manacor, or one of the schools in Palma and Portals. The numbers above explain part of it. From Santanyí, Manacor is half the distance of any school in Palma or Calvià, and the drive runs through inland roads rather than the Palma ring road. It is also the only school in the table above that teaches an American programme.

The picture changes depending on the village. From Campos, Manacor and the German school in s’Arenal are both within about 25 minutes, and Palma is within 40. From Ses Salines, Manacor and the German school in s’Arenal are both about 35 minutes away, and the schools in Palma just under 50. That is why the map matters as much as the curriculum when a family chooses where to live.

The village school: how the public system works

Public education in Spain is free and compulsory from 6 to 16, and most children start earlier, at 3, in the second cycle of infant education. In the Balearic Islands it is managed by the Conselleria d’Educació i Universitats. Children aged 3 to 12 attend a CEIP (infant and primary school); from 12 to 18 they attend an IES (secondary school), which covers compulsory secondary education and the two-year Bachillerato. Teaching is in the island’s two official languages, Spanish and Mallorquín.

These are the public schools in our three municipalities, according to the Conselleria’s register. Santanyí: CEIP Blai Bonet in the village, CEIP Calonge, CEIP Mare de Déu de la Consolació in s’Alqueria Blanca, CEIP Sant Domingo in es Llombards and CEIP Santa Maria del Mar in Cala d’Or, plus IES Santanyí. Ses Salines: CEIP Ses Salines and CEIP Colònia de Sant Jordi; the municipality has no secondary school of its own. Campos: CEIP Joan Veny i Clar and CEIP de Call Vermell, plus IES Damià Huguet. Santanyí and Campos also each have a private school, Bisbe Verger and Fra Joan Ballester.

Nurseries: the municipal escoletes

For children under 3, each town hall runs its own escoleta. The register lists two in Santanyí (Santanyí and Cala d’Or), two in Ses Salines (the village and Colònia de Sant Jordi) and one in Campos (Taperons). Admission to these nurseries follows a separate process for the first cycle of infant education, with its own calendar and criteria published by the Conselleria each spring.

How to apply for a place

For public and publicly funded schools, the ordinary admission process opens in spring for the following September, under rules set by the Conselleria (Order 4/2026 for the current cycle). Families who arrive outside that window can file an out-of-period application at any time of year. The official checklist asks for a current certificate of registration on the municipal roll (empadronamiento) for the child and one parent, passports or NIE for the child and both parents, a birth certificate, and the last school report if the child comes from another school system. In villages with only one primary school, the school itself can register the application; elsewhere it goes through the schooling office for the area. Mallorca has offices in Palma, Calvià, Marratxí, Inca and Manacor, listed on caib.es.

International schools run their own admissions. Rafa Nadal International School, for example, asks for an application form and the previous year’s reports, and may ask middle and high school applicants to sit a written test in English and math.

The 2026-2027 school calendar

According to the resolution published in the BOIB on 31 March 2026, classes in infant, primary, secondary and Bachillerato start on 10 September 2026 and end on 18 June 2027, a total of 176 school days. Christmas holidays run from 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, and Easter holidays from 25 March to 4 April 2027. There is no school on 12 October, 8 December, 6 January, 1 March (Balearic Islands Day) and 26 February 2027, plus the two local holidays of each town and two days chosen by each school. International schools publish their own calendars on their websites.

School hours and the daily drive

The published timetables give a sense of the day. Bellver College starts lessons at 9:10 and finishes at 4:15 pm in primary; Baleares International College runs from 8:45 to 4 pm in Sa Porrassa and to 3:45 pm in Sant Agustí; Queen’s College starts at 8:50 and finishes at 3:50 pm; The Montessori School runs from 9 to 4 pm, until 3:30 on Fridays. Agora Portals offers supervised care from 7:50 am and until 5:30 pm.

On transport, Agora Portals publishes a bus service from Palma (El Corte Inglés Avenidas), Son Verí and Marratxí (Festival Park), and Eurocampus runs a school bus line from Palma (Auditorium). Rafa Nadal International School does not publish bus routes on its website. For a family in the south-east, the practical rule is to plan on driving, or on sharing the drive with other families.
