What is the Non-Lucrative Visa for Spain and how do US citizens apply?

The Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is a residency permit specifically designed for non-EU citizens who have sufficient passive income or savings to support themselves without working locally in Spain. It is currently the most popular and straightforward pathway for American retirees and wealthy expats moving to Mallorca.

The Post-Golden Visa Landscape

With the closure of the real estate investment route for the Golden Visa in 2025, the Non-Lucrative Visa has taken center stage for US buyers. The philosophy behind the NLV is simple and welcoming: Spain wants you to live here, spend your money, and enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle, provided you do not take a job away from a local resident and do not rely on the state’s public healthcare or social security systems.

For high-net-worth individuals, early retirees, and investors from the United States, this is the ultimate golden ticket to year-round European living.

Key Financial Requirements for the NLV in 2026

To successfully apply for the NLV, you must submit your application to the Spanish Consulate in the United States that has jurisdiction over your home state. You cannot apply for this visa while already in Spain on a tourist stamp. The core of the application is proving undeniable financial self-sufficiency. The Spanish government uses a fluctuating economic index called the IPREM to calculate this requirement.

  1. Proof of Passive Income: You need to show a reliable, ongoing source of passive income. For US citizens, this typically includes Social Security payments, 401(k) or IRA distributions, private pension plans, stock dividends, trust fund payouts, or rental income from properties in the US.

  2. The Financial Threshold: As of 2026, the main applicant must demonstrate a monthly income of 400% of the IPREM (which translates to roughly €2,400 to €2,600 per month, or around €30,000 annually). You must add an additional 100% of the IPREM (approx. €600 per month) for your spouse and each dependent child you plan to bring with you.

  3. The Savings Alternative: If you do not have a steady monthly passive income, many consulates will accept a highly liquid bank balance that covers the entire required amount for the year upfront. For a couple, showing a US bank statement with well over $45,000 to $50,000 in readily accessible cash is often sufficient.

  4. Private Health Insurance: Because you cannot use the public system, you must purchase a comprehensive, zero-copay, zero-deductible private health insurance policy from a provider operating in Spain, such as Sanitas or Adeslas.

Can I work on a Non-Lucrative Visa?

The short and strict answer is no. You are not allowed to engage in any economic or professional activity that generates income within Spain. If you are a remote worker, a consultant, or a freelancer actively earning a salary from a US company, the NLV is no longer the correct route for you. If you plan to work, you should apply for the Digital Nomad Visa instead.

The Path to Permanent Residency

The NLV is initially granted for one year. At the end of that year, provided you still meet the financial requirements and have lived in Spain for more than 183 days, you can renew it for two years, and then another two years. Once you have lived in Mallorca legally and continuously for five years, you can apply for Permanent Residency. This massive milestone permanently removes the strict financial and non-working conditions from your status.

The Villas y Fincas Mallorca Angle

While buying a house doesn’t automatically grant you an NLV, owning a premium property in Mallorca significantly strengthens your visa application. It proves to the consulate that you have permanent accommodation secured and deep ties to Spain. We help our American buyers find the perfect year-round fincas in Santanyi and Ses Salines, and seamlessly introduce them to elite legal experts who handle the entire complex NLV application process from start to finish.
