Ses Salines is a flat, quiet inland village that keeps the everyday rhythm of Mallorcan life, with a Thursday market and two restaurants known across the island. Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi, about nine minutes away, is its fishing harbor, with town beaches, the natural beaches of Es Dol\u00e7 and Es Carb\u00f3, and the boats to the Cabrera National Park. A protected bike and pedestrian lane links the two. Its name explains itself: the area has a long history of salt ponds, and the flor de sal of Es Trenc, the natural sea salt harvested here, is one of its best-known products. The Balearic tourism agency notes that the salt ponds of s&#8217;Avall are considered among the oldest in the world, active in Roman times (<a href=\"https:\/\/illesbalears.travel\/en\/mallorca\/municipis\/ses-salines\">Illes Balears tourism agency<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Within that one municipality there are two places with very different characters. <strong>Ses Salines<\/strong> is the inland village, surrounded by flat farmland and country houses. <strong>Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi<\/strong> is the village by the sea, built around its harbor. Ses Salines is flat, and so is the countryside around it, which makes walking and cycling part of normal life rather than a sport. The second is the pace. This is a village that keeps the daily life of Mallorca: the morning coffee, the errands on foot, the long lunch, the evening in the square.<\/p>\n<p>Ses Salines is also a village where everyone knows each other. The new residents we work with value exactly that combination: a close community, and a high degree of privacy at home.<\/p>\n<p>The village is also known for two of its restaurants: <strong>Casa Manolo<\/strong>, one of the best-known traditional restaurants in Mallorca, and <strong>Cassai<\/strong>, one of the most talked-about of recent years. The Botanicactus botanical garden is also in Ses Salines.<\/p>\n<h2>Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi: the harbor and its beaches<\/h2>\n<p>Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi is a fishing harbor that grew into a seaside village. The working port, the small boats and the seafront promenade are the center of life, and from the harbor you can see the Cabrera archipelago on the horizon on a clear day. The town beach of Es Port is where residents swim on an ordinary morning.<\/p>\n<p>Around the village, the coast changes quickly. <strong>Es Dol\u00e7<\/strong>, close to the harbor, is a beach of fine white sand with shallow water and a pine grove behind it that gives shade in summer. The tourism agency notes that families from Palma, Ses Salines and Llucmajor have kept second homes here for decades, which gives it a family atmosphere (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.illesbalears.travel\/en\/mallorca\/beach-es-dolc\">Es Dol\u00e7<\/a>). Further along, <strong>Es Carb\u00f3<\/strong> is a 1.4 km beach of very fine sand that can only be reached on foot or by boat; it is part of the Migjorn de Mallorca marine reserve, and visitors bring their own water and shoes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.illesbalears.travel\/en\/mallorca\/beach-es-carbo\">Es Carb\u00f3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In the other direction, Es Trenc is about 5 km from Col\u00f2nia: a beach almost 2 km long, with a paid car park, inside a protected natural area (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.illesbalears.travel\/en\/mallorca\/beach-es-trenc\">Es Trenc<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Salt ponds and a protected coast<\/h2>\n<p>Behind Es Trenc lies the Es Trenc\u2013Salobrar de Campos Maritime-Terrestrial Natural Park, declared in 2017. According to the Balearic government, it protects 3,768 hectares, 61 percent of them at sea, and it includes a salt works at the Salobrar de Campos and a smaller one near Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi; traditional salt making and farming are considered part of what keeps the area as it is (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caib.es\/sites\/espaisnaturalsprotegits\/f\/487602\">Balearic Government, natural protected areas<\/a>). The tourism agency describes the Salobrar as a refuge for birds, flamingos among them (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.illesbalears.travel\/en\/mallorca\/nature-park-es-trenc-salobrar-de-campos\">Es Trenc\u2013Salobrar de Campos<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This protected landscape of open fields, dunes and low coast is one of the main reasons buyers choose this municipality.<\/p>\n<h2>Cabrera, ten nautical miles from the harbor<\/h2>\n<p>Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi is the closest Mallorcan port to the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, about ten nautical miles away. The park has been protected since 1991 and is the only national park in the Balearic Islands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miteco.gob.es\/es\/parques-nacionales-oapn\/red-parques-nacionales\/parques-nacionales\/cabrera.html\">Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition<\/a>). In the summer months, tourist boats leave from Col\u00f2nia; access with collective transport goes through the park&#8217;s own booking platform, and arriving on your own boat requires a navigation permit (<a href=\"https:\/\/caib.es\/sites\/espaisnaturalsprotegits\/ca\/parc_nacional_maritimoterrestre_de_larxipalag_de_cabrera\/\">Balearic Government, Cabrera National Park<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illesbalears.travel\/en\/mallorca\/interpretation-center-ses-salines\">Ses Salines Visitor Centre<\/a>, in Col\u00f2nia, opened in 2008 and offers a visit of about 30 minutes through aquariums and exhibits about the archipelago, a way to understand Cabrera without crossing to it.<\/p>\n<h2>Summer and winter<\/h2>\n<p>In summer there is more life: more people at the beaches, terraces fuller in Col\u00f2nia, more movement in the village in the evening. Even so, in what we see Ses Salines is not saturated in high season. It has become one of the villages people talk about in Mallorca while staying one of the quietest, and that balance is what draws many of our clients.<\/p>\n<p>Many of those who settle here have looked at other villages of the south-east first. What they want is specific: flat land, calm streets and a village that still keeps its Mallorcan everyday life. In winter, Ses Salines keeps its rhythm, and Col\u00f2nia becomes a harbor village for the people who live there all year.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting around: the bike lane and the roads<\/h2>\n<p>Everything here is close. Between the two villages, the Consell de Mallorca, the island council, inaugurated in February 2024 a 4.5 km lane for bicycles and pedestrians, separated from the road by a wooden safety barrier (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conselldemallorca.es\/es\/carreteras\/-\/asset_publisher\/rtNoT1cDqht7\/content\/el-president-del-consell-de-mallorca-inaugura-la-reforma-de-la-carretera-de-ses-salines-a-la-colonia-de-sant-jordi\/695139\">Consell de Mallorca<\/a>). It means you can ride or walk from the village to the sea safely.<\/p>\n<p>For everything else, the car. These driving times were measured on October 19, 2026 with OSRM on OpenStreetMap (car, free-flowing traffic), between the Ajuntament of Ses Salines or the center of Col\u00f2nia and Pla\u00e7a d&#8217;Espanya in Palma or the airport terminal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ses Salines to Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi<\/strong>: about 6 km, 9 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ses Salines to Santany\u00ed<\/strong>: about 11 minutes; <strong>to Campos<\/strong>: about 15 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Palma airport to Ses Salines<\/strong>: about 44 minutes; <strong>Pla\u00e7a d&#8217;Espanya in Palma<\/strong>: about 45 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Palma airport to Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi<\/strong>: about 46 minutes; <strong>Pla\u00e7a d&#8217;Espanya in Palma<\/strong>: about 47 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With normal traffic, allow somewhat more. In Ses Salines, village houses in the center, in streets that are calm all year. In the countryside around it, country houses with land: space, silence, a pool and the sea about ten minutes away. In Col\u00f2nia, homes and apartments near the harbor and the beaches.<\/p>\n<p>In what we see with our clients, the buyer here is looking for a village house or a country house in the farmland between Ses Salines and Campos. Three profiles stand out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>German buyers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Swiss buyers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Americans who work remotely<\/strong>, with a village around them, the sea close by and the airport within reach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What nobody tells you<\/h2>\n<p>The village of Ses Salines has no beach of its own. The sea is close, by car or by the bike lane, but it is not at the end of the street, and that is part of why the village stays quiet.<\/p>\n<p>For remote workers, the connection is the first thing to check, home by home. In the countryside, coverage varies from one plot to the next, and on some country houses owners rely on satellite internet.<\/p>\n<p>And in a village where everyone knows each other, you will be known too. The privacy is in the home; the village life is outside the door.<\/p>\n<h2>What you need to know<\/h2>\n<h3>Where are Ses Salines and Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi?<\/h3>\n<p>At the southern tip of Mallorca.
